Creating Custom Reports in Metabase
This guide walks you through creating, customising, and saving reports using Metabase, Finverity’s reporting platform.
These reports help you analyse performance, monitor activity, and share real-time insights across your organisation.

1. Navigate to the Reporting Platform
To access the reporting environment, simply insert reporting. before your usual Finverity URL.
For example: https://reporting..client_name.scf.com

2. Log in
Enter the credentials provided to you to access the reporting environment.

3. Create a New Report
Click “New” in the top-right corner to begin creating a report.

4. Choose “Question”
Select Question. This is the foundational building block in Metabase.
A question is a query that pulls data from one or more tables and can later be turned into a chart, table, or metric.

5. Select a Data Table
Pick the dataset you want to query.
Example: Instruments, which stores all invoices, purchase orders, and loans uploaded to the system.

6. Customise the Query
Use the query builder options to filter, calculate, and format data.
You can:
Add or remove columns
Define calculations
Apply conditions (filters)

7. Join Related Tables
Click the Join icon to merge data from related tables.
This lets you include fields (e.g., Buyer name, Payment status) from other datasets.

8. Create Custom Columns
Use Custom Columns to create new calculated fields from existing data.
Examples:
Calculate payment delay = Payment Date – Due Date
Compute margin = Revenue – Cost

9. Add Filters
Apply filters to limit the dataset.
Examples:
Date range (e.g., “Last 30 days”)
Buyer or Seller name
Transaction status

10. Summarise Data
Click Summarise to calculate aggregated data.
Common summaries include:
Sum: Total invoice value
Count: Number of transactions
Average: Average funding amount

11. Sort Data
Use Sort to organise results (ascending or descending). This improves readability and helps surface trends, such as highest-value invoices.

12. (Optional) Convert to SQL
If you need more control, click “Convert to SQL” to view or edit the query directly.
You can:
Adjust advanced filters
Use aggregate or conditional logic
Create joins not available in the visual builder
Be cautious: Switching to SQL disables visual editing for that query.

13. Visualise the Results
Click Visualise to display your data in charts or tables.
Metabase automatically suggests a view based on the data type.

14. Review Query Results
After running the query, a results table appears.
Use the Gear icon to:
Change column order or visibility
Adjust formatting
Rename columns for clarity

15. Add or Remove Columns
Click Add/Remove Columns to simplify the view. Focus on only the most relevant data points.

16. Apply Conditional Formatting
Highlight key metrics visually.
Example:
Cells in red if “Overdue Days” > 10
Cells in green for “Paid” status

17. Choose Visualisation Type
Click Visualisation to change how data is presented. Options include different chart types and styles, allowing you to present data in a format that best conveys your insights.

18. Select a Chart Type
Choose the best fit for your data:
Bar Chart: Compare values across categories
Line Chart: Show trends over time
Pie Chart: Display proportions
Table: Best for detailed transactional data

19. Save the Visualisation
Click Done to apply and save your visualisation settings.

20. Refine Your Report Further
You can add more filters, conditions, or calculated fields to make the report more insightful.
Tip: Keep reports modular — simpler queries run faster and are easier to maintain.

21. Save the Report
Click Save in the top-right corner.

22. Name and Categorise the Report
Enter a Name and select a Collection (folder) to store it.
Collections help you organise reports by theme (e.g., “Operations”, “Finance”, “Performance”).
Click Save again to confirm. Your new report will now appear in the selected collection.

23. Add Report to a Dashboard
You can now add your report to an existing or new dashboard.
Dashboards group multiple questions and visualisations into one view.
24. Summary
You’ve created a fully custom report in Metabase! From data selection and filtering to visualisation and dashboard sharing.
These reports help you analyse performance, monitor activity, and share real-time insights across your organisation.
